Narrative illustration

As a kid I loved those Reader’s Digest stories about dramatic, true life disasters illustrated with two-page spread illustrations of grizzlies attacking campers and folks in sinking boats. My young imagination felt the panic and urgency.

In class last week I drew, along with my students, a story-telling illo of the time I slipped on ice, broke my wrist and was offered help which i could not accept as i didn’t want my dog to hurt the helpers.

My dog was actually a cute Brussels Griffon but it was too difficult to make that breed look menacing so I changed it to something more visually ‘digestive’ to ‘readers’!
