Using photo-retouching techniques, former architect and now traveling artist/photographer, Tadao Cern from Vilnius, Lithuania, has taken Vincent van Gogh‘s September 1889 Self-Portrait (which hangs at Musée d’Orsay in Paris) and managed to create this baffling and realistic interpretation of the famous painter. I think this looks super cool. Reverse time technology. Inside out reality. The image is beautiful and eerie — the colors so pure and sharp. There is theatricality and humanity at once shining out. I used the image to help me with a recent cartoon (below).
FYI: When I saw a big van Gogh show at the Met years ago it wasn’t the paintings that struck me at all — it was the brown ink drawings of grasses, bushes, fields. Exquisite, like his hand was there drawing and his eyes looking.
