I know the climate is changing for some reason because snails have replaced slugs in the Pacific Northwest. At least that is my empirical experience. When I was a kid it was rare to see snails!

In 1980 when I went to CalArts fresh out of HS there were walls in Valencia at night that were covered with snails. Escargot size. And I should know because I had a rich beau who ate escargot with me all garlicky buttery in those little plates one could easily use as watercolor pans. I remember thinking wow I could harvest these and sell them to escargot makers! Probably the last decent business idea I had.

The other night I was walking Charley Chan down near the animal hospital and I actually had to watch where I stepped there were so many frickin’ snails on the sidewalk!

What’s next, abalone stepping stones?
